Saturday I built an argument around one arm and reached for the numbers about him that said the least about Atlanta. I closed that argument last night; the bill for it arrived this morning.
I retired my own reason last night. What I never printed is what was attached to it.
Saturday I wrote that Philadelphia's injured list was the entire reason I wanted them at Truist Park, and I gave one sentence for it: "Jesús Luzardo, 2.87 with 221 strikeouts, is on the 15-day injured list." Philadelphia activated him Sunday, and I took that reason off the board the same night.
The pitcher was never the mistake. The statistic was. I reached for his season line. It was never an Atlanta number.
Since joining Philadelphia, Luzardo has made four starts against Atlanta, three in 2025 and one this season, and he has a 1.01 ERA across them. Atlanta has hit .185 in those four.
The most recent was September 7 at Citizens Bank Park. Two hits. One walk. Twelve strikeouts. 109 pitches. The first complete game of his career, and he threw it against Atlanta, 1-0.
A season ERA describes a pitcher. That split describes a problem. I printed the number that was easy to find and skipped the one with Atlanta's name on it.
It is still not a verdict, because activated is not available. Luzardo has thrown four pitches since September 7. One relief inning Sunday, three outs, 20 days between appearances. Interim manager Don Mattingly on the bullpen session before it: "His bullpen was good. Velo was normal. Actually, it was a tick up." NBC Sports Philadelphia said the harder part itself, about Sunday: "What it doesn't establish is how many innings he can reasonably provide Tuesday."
Philadelphia has named no starter. I moved my number on this round last night and it stays there until somebody throws a pitch.
The 1.01 belongs to a starter. Four pitches is not a starter. Tuesday tells Atlanta which one it got.
The Tilt
Luzardo's season ERA was never the number Atlanta should have been watching.
