Lo Que Falta

Three matches. Eight days. The same kickoff time on all three -- 7:30 p.m. ET, Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday.

Nobody drew this up as a verdict. It has become one anyway.

Saturday takes Atlanta United to Nu Stadium at Miami Freedom Park, away to the second-placed club in the Eastern Conference. Wednesday brings Orlando City to Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Saturday after that is Audi Field. And two of those three opponents are not obstacles standing in the way of the chase. They are the chase.

Orlando City hold the ninth and final playoff place in the East on 25 points. D.C. United have 25 as well. Atlanta have 21. Four points -- and six of them are available inside eight days, against the two clubs holding them.

That is not a punishment schedule. That is the door.

Even Saturday is not quite what it looks like. Inter Miami have won eight of 12 on the road this season and four of 10 at home. Why that is true is not something I can tell you. That it is true is worth carrying south before anyone writes the trip off in advance.

### The club in ninth is not a better team

Read the line from underneath, as it stands this morning. It will not stand long: Orlando, Toronto and D.C. all play before Atlanta host anyone.

Orlando are ninth with a goal difference of minus-17. Atlanta are 13th at minus-13. Orlando have conceded 54, more than any club in the conference. On the road Orlando are 2-7-2. On the road Atlanta are 2-7-2. Identical.

Everything between those two clubs was built at home, where Orlando have won five and Atlanta have won four.

Wednesday, Atlanta are at home.

D.C. is stranger still. They have scored 28 goals in 22 matches, second fewest in the East. Atlanta have scored 25, the fewest. September 12 at Audi Field is the two least productive attacks in the conference playing each other for a playoff place.

### Three draws in 22

Here is the number that explains the table better than any of the others.

Atlanta United have drawn three matches all season. Three, from 22 -- fewer than any club in the Eastern Conference. D.C. United have drawn ten. Toronto have drawn ten.

Now count the wins. Atlanta six. D.C. five. Toronto five.

Atlanta have won more matches this season than D.C. or Toronto. Both of them sit four points above. What they have not done, in months, is walk out of a bad night holding something. Thirteen losses.

This team knows how to win a match. It does not know how to not lose one. In a run-in decided by six-pointers, the second skill is worth as much as the first.

### The reinforcements are here. The team is not.

The rebuild never paused for the run-in. It ran alongside it. Breel Embolo arrived from Stade Rennais on August 23 as a Designated Player, committed through 2029-30. Giuliano Galoppo, 27, arrived on Wednesday, deadline day, on loan from River Plate through June 2027 with an option to buy.

Neither has played a league match for Atlanta United.

Chris Henderson, announcing the Galoppo loan, said the midfielder "will raise the level of competition within the group as we continue to strengthen our roster heading into the final stretch of the season." That is honest, and it is a sentence about a process. Processes take weeks. The final stretch starts in two days.

So this is the true shape of the eight days: two players signed to fix the thing that most needs fixing, and not one minute yet between them.

The thing itself is not subtle. Twenty-five goals in 22 matches. The leading scorer is Alexey Miranchuk, a midfielder, on five. He is joint-top in assists too, on six. No forward has more than three. A defender is level with the forwards.

I am not going to tell you who starts on Saturday, and neither can anyone else. The league does not publish the availability report for that match until Friday. Anything before then is guessing in public.

### Lo que falta

Twelve matches left. Six at home, six away. Four points.

Lo que falta -- what is missing -- was never a striker, and after Wednesday it is not a signature either. It is the one point this team never takes. It is the weeks Embolo and Galoppo do not have.

Eight days. Two of the clubs Atlanta are chasing. One of those nights at the Benz, and no version of this season survives losing it.
