The team that has already won its division got shut out at home by the worst team in another one. Two more Atlanta rosters were rewritten before midnight.

Braves

Atlanta are 92-65 with the National League East already clinched, and on Tuesday they were beaten 4-0 at Truist Park by a Cincinnati club that is 73-84 and last in the National League Central. Seven hits, no runs. Milwaukee at 98-59 and Los Angeles at 97-60 have clinched as well, and the standings' own order reads Milwaukee, Los Angeles, Atlanta — an ordering that five games against two losing clubs is not going to rewrite. Those five come off the schedule: Cincinnati again tonight and Thursday at Truist Park, then three at Miami beginning Friday. The two opponents are a combined 150-164. So the useful question this morning is what the games are actually for, and the answer is narrower than a week of baseball usually is. Position is settled. Health is not. Ronald Acuña Jr. is listed Active on the 40-man roster with no transaction filed against his name since July, and ESPN's feed carried a day-to-day designation overnight after he fouled a ball off his leg — Ellis has the mechanism, and the distinction is the piece. He has played 104 games this season, which is a fair summary of his 2026 on its own. No lineup card had posted when this went out. First pitch 7:15, Chris Sale listed against Andrew Abbott. Robert Suarez is still carried on the 60-day injured list, and nothing has been filed on him since the rehab assignment on the 20th. A stretch that cannot improve your position can still subtract from it, and that is the whole shape of the next five days.

Hawks

Buddy Hield, Ryan Nembhard and cash considerations to Charlotte for Dorian Finney-Smith. Two guards out, the cash out with them, a forward in — that much is the clubs' own language rather than anybody's read of it. The detail worth keeping is the order it arrived in: Charlotte's newsroom published the release, Atlanta's published its own, and the wire story came after both of them. This section has spent three straight mornings running on dates that arrived from somewhere else while the club itself said nothing. Last night the club said it, and said it first. Tilt has two reads on the basketball and they are not the same read — Simone on the shooting, Dex on the verdicts.

Falcons

Two starters named for Thursday, neither of them chosen. Michael Penix Jr. is the announced starter at Lambeau Field, cleared per ESPN's feed for his 2026 debut after a knee kept him out of the first two games. Somebody else starts at cornerback because A.J. Terrell Jr. is on injured reserve with a groin injury and, per the same feed, out at least four games. Beyond Terrell the same feed carries two Atlanta players as questionable and every other name in the block as active, so the short week is not the problem here — the two jobs that changed are. An 0-2 team in this position is not building a lineup so much as receiving one. Miles has both arguments this morning and they are genuinely separate — what Atlanta already knows about itself without Terrell, and where the offense is actually stopping. Kickoff 8:15 Thursday night.

Atlanta United

Fourteenth in the Eastern Conference on 26 points from 26 matches, seven points behind FC Cincinnati in ninth and last of the playoff places, and Cincinnati hold a match in hand. That gap is not the interesting number. The interesting number sits one line up the table. Columbus Crew are 13th with a line identical to Atlanta's in every column a table headline prints — 7-5-14, 26 played, 26 points — and goal difference is the field separating 13th from 14th. Columbus are minus five. Atlanta are minus 13. Eight goals, and counting the table's own 26 matches against a 34-match season leaves eight to play them in. Thirty scored, 43 conceded: that is where the minus 13 comes from. A table position seven points away is not something this club is going to chase down. A goal difference is something it can work on, which is a smaller ambition and a real one, and it is the line on the sheet eight matches can actually reach. They are not yet eliminated. New York City FC, 10th on 32 points, are at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday at 7:30.

One more thing.

Two Atlanta rosters changed on the same Tuesday and only one of them changed on purpose. No one at the Falcons picked Thursday's quarterback or Thursday's replacement cornerback; a knee and a groin did that. The Hawks made a choice and put their own name on it. Set that beside five Braves games that cannot move a standing and eight United matches that probably cannot either, and the rarest thing in Atlanta sports this week turns out to be a decision somebody actually sat down and made.
