Every dated page since Sept. 7 leaves the call with Michael Penix Jr., and neither quote the club used to announce him has the word ready in it. The club wrote that word itself Monday, so Thursday's box score gets one number to check it.

Sept. 7, on the club's own site, what he told Kevin Stefanski: "I just told him I'm not where I want to be right now," and "I don't think there's a timestamp on it," he said. Same page, the club's word on whose decision that was: the coaching staff "won't put themselves in a position to compromise that decision," dated Sept. 7.
Wednesday, Sept. 16, same site: "I'm close. I'm close," and the checklist stayed his. "I'm going to keep those to myself and the training staff," he said. The word came out once, future tense, knee permitting: "I'm going to be ready to play." Josh Kendall of The Athletic wrote the rule that week: "Penix has to tell the team he is ready to play," and no page I can find prints him doing it.
Monday, Sept. 21, fourteen days after Sept. 7, the club named him. Stefanski's sentence on the process is Miles's to parse; the announcement quotes Penix from Sept. 7 and Sept. 16, neither newer than last Wednesday, neither with the word in it. The sentence with it is the club's: "He's ready to go."
Sunday's call is a favorite tonight, and it cashes on a snap, not an announcement.
The new one grades from the box score. Last year Penix threw 26 or more in seven of his eight full starts, per ESPN's game log. The exception: 21 at Minnesota, a win. The ninth start ended at 16, on the knee. Thursday, for an offense yet to take a snap inside the 20 this season, the line is 26 attempts. Twenty-five or fewer and the club said ready and coached close. Graded here Friday, Sept. 25.
He kept the checklist to himself and the training staff. A box score keeps nothing to itself.
