The Lowest Seed Put Inter Miami Out

In November 2024 the lowest seed in the Eastern Conference bracket knocked Inter Miami out of the playoffs, and 68,455 people watched part of it happen in this building. The man in Inter Miami's technical area that night is now Atlanta United's head coach.

Two Novembers ago this building held 68,455 people for a playoff match, and the club that walked out of it beaten was Inter Miami.

Atlanta United 2, Inter Miami 1, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on November 2, 2024. A week later at Chase Stadium: Inter Miami 2, Atlanta United 3. ESPN's record of that second night reads "ATL wins series 2-1." Atlanta took the best-of-three two games to one.

Atlanta were the lowest seed in the bracket, in through the Wild Card round. Inter Miami had just won the Supporters' Shield with a record 74 points.

And the man in Inter Miami's technical area that night was Gerardo "Tata" Martino.

He resigned 10 days later — personal reasons, a return to Argentina. He is now Atlanta United's head coach. Chris Henderson, Atlanta's sporting director, came from Inter Miami too.

The man in Atlanta's technical area on Saturday was in Miami's the night this club put them out.

### I gave the wrong answer in September

On September 2 I filed What Ninth Place Actually Buys, and my answer was: one knockout match, on the road, then almost certainly Nashville SC. Four points buys a coin flip.

Honest arithmetic, incomplete answer. In 2024 that coin flip bought a Wild Card win and then a series against the club that had just set the league's points record — and Atlanta won it.

Which is not a forecast. A side 14th of 15 does not become dangerous because of something it did two Novembers ago. I reached for Martino-against-his-own-project in August and left this half out. The memory is not evidence; it is the honest size of the prize.

### The table, once

Atlanta United have 30 points from 29 matches, 14th of 15 in the East, above only CF Montréal. Five matches left, ending away at Red Bull New York on Decision Day, November 7. The ceiling is 45, and they are not mathematically eliminated: nine clubs would have to finish above them, and only five in the East are guaranteed to. That is arithmetic, and I am not going to dress it up as a probability.

Here is what I have never printed. Seven clubs are still in the fight for the last two qualifying places, and of the 37 fixtures left on their seven schedules, 22 are against each other — 11 matches in which one of them has to take points off another. Atlanta hold three: New York City FC away, Toronto FC at home, Red Bull New York on the final day. FC Cincinnati and D.C. United, the only two down here with a match in hand, play each other twice in four days, October 21 and 24.

That is not hope. It is a schedule — the first thing about this run-in that is not a subtraction.

### What Miami have said about Saturday

Nothing.

Lionel Messi started at right forward against New York City FC on Wednesday, took seven shots and was not substituted — a full match three days before this one. He scored twice four days before that. He has 23 goals in 26 league appearances and has played in each of Miami's last eight. He is on no unavailability list, he has retired from international football, and Miami's next fixture is seven days after Saturday: no window, no midweek.

All of it points one direction, and none of it is a team selection. Cristian "Kily" González says the club "looks after him and protects him" — true of every week, settled about none.

Atlanta have said nothing either. On Wednesday I wrote that the stoppage at 79 minutes in Montréal was everything I would say about Miguel Almirón, and it still is: no club report has come as of Friday morning, and he is on no absence list. His last act in this shirt was a goal at 22 minutes.

### The room

Miami arrive already into the playoffs, second in the East on 52 points, still playing for a seed four clubs below can take.

I have no crowd figure for you: ESPN has not reported an Atlanta home attendance since August. Their last regular-season visit here, March 2025, drew 42,844. The one that filled this place was a playoff match — 68,455, watching the lowest seed in the bracket beat the best team in the league.

La memoria. Two clubs, a day and a half out, neither saying who plays. The visitors have left this building beaten in a playoff match before, and a week later they were out of the competition.

The Tilt

Ninth place is worth more than I said it was in September.
