The Six Ran Out

Atlanta clinched the season series against Philadelphia tonight, 7-2, with four games still to play. The tiebreaker is decided, and I am one loss away from being wrong about everything else.

Philadelphia's last piece of insurance is gone.

Atlanta won 5-4 at Citizens Bank Park tonight and clinched the 2026 season series, 7-2, with four meetings still on the schedule. Ellis has the game -- the Acuña homer, the ninth-inning triple, the whole comeback. I have the standings page.

Here is what the standings page says.

These clubs meet thirteen times this year. Nine are played. Atlanta have seven of them. Philadelphia can win all four that are left and finish 6-7. There is no arrangement of the next two weeks that hands them the season series.

Head-to-head is MLB's first tiebreaker for a division tie, and Game 163 stopped existing in 2022. So if these two finish level, Atlanta win the NL East. Atlanta have already done this once: 2022, both clubs 101-61, Atlanta took the division on a 10-9 head-to-head and nobody played an extra game.

On Friday I wrote that one more Atlanta win locks the tiebreaker at 7-6, and that Philadelphia have to win all six. I was 88% on that, and I said in print it was bolted to a calendar and a rulebook rather than to a claim that Atlanta are good. The calendar and the rulebook did their job tonight.

That is the half I got right.

Here is the half I am about to lose. I am on record at 56% that Atlanta do not win this four-game series, with a falsification condition I printed myself: Atlanta take three or four and I was wrong. Atlanta lead it 2-1. They can no longer lose it. One more win tomorrow and I am flatly, publicly wrong.

Both of those are true on the same night.

Philadelphia now have to beat them Monday, and then win a division with no safety net under it.

The Tilt

The NL East is effectively over, and Philadelphia lost it in the tiebreaker column.
