The Unit Came From the Reporters

The club's Wednesday report lists three quarterbacks and gives each one label: Michael Penix Jr., knee, full participation; Cooper Rush, back, full participation; Tua Tagovailoa, oblique, did not participate. That is all the table says about the position. On Tuesday I wrote that this report would name participation, not a starter. It did, and that grade is not the piece.

The piece is what arrived beside the document. On the club's site, Will McFadden wrote that Rush, at his press conference, "said he and Penix were splitting reps with the first-year offense." That is the club writer's paraphrase, and its word is "first-year." "First-team" is on the page only in McFadden's own next sentence, that Penix "began working with the first-team offense during practice." No sentence of Rush's on the split sits inside quotation marks on the club's page, ESPN's or the AJC's. ESPN's Marc Raimondi reported it himself: "On Wednesday, Penix split first-team reps in practice with Rush," and "Last week, Penix got only scout-team reps with Tagovailoa, while Rush worked with the first team." The AJC's Daniel Flick reported the periods: Rush "paced the unit at each turn" in the footwork and hand-off drills, then "split snaps with Michael Penix Jr." in routes on air and 11-on-11. Rush's words in the AJC are about the work and reps in general, not the split.

Before practice, Kevin Stefanski had been asked whether Penix was taking snaps with the first-team offense and declined to say: "Not going to get into specifics, as you can imagine, with all of our rep plans. But (it) continues to progress." So the unit is on the record from three reporters, one of them the club's own, and from the head coach not at all. None of the three carries a rep count. "Split" is each outlet's word, and I will not upgrade it to a share.

What a split day is evidence of

On September 10 I wrote that nothing published established how Penix was taking his repetitions, and that rep distribution is exactly the detail a practice report is not built to disclose. Wednesday's disclosed Full, Full, DNP; the distribution came from the sideline, and what it saw is a change. Last week Rush took all of the first-team reps Thursday and Friday, per the club, while Penix, per ESPN, got only scout-team reps. This week, on its first practice, the first-team snaps were shared.

That is consistent with a Penix start Sunday against Carolina, a Penix start at Green Bay the following Thursday, and a club that has not decided. The one reading it is not consistent with is Tuesday's, that Rush's name on the club's media advisory rested on no new information (this morning's edition has the edit). Reps are information. They are not a signature. Dex's calendar still runs, whoever starts Sunday starts Thursday, and nobody was named Wednesday.

Penix, in his own words

What "close" means, Penix described on the club's page, and the medical part stays inside his quotation marks: "I had to use a quad graft because I used both of my patellar tendon grafts. I also got an operation on my lateral side. I got more done to my knee than he got. So, if you look at me after my first ACL surgery in 2018, I was back in six months, but this is my third one. I don't have the same tendons and stuff to use for this ACL graft. Also, I added that lateral LET graft that I got. So, it's more than, 'Oh, Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL and he's playing, why isn't Mike?' It's two totally different injuries." I add nothing to that.

The other lines

Chris Lindstrom, concussion, did not participate; the protocol the club said Monday he would enter is on my record, and the right guard question it leaves open now has two reports to go. A.J. Terrell Jr., shoulder, did not practice after leaving and returning to the Pittsburgh game. Billy Bowman Jr., Achilles, practiced in full after being ruled out of Week 1. Da'Shawn Hand went to injured reserve Wednesday and Nick Muse took the spot; that ledger is Ray's.

The next document

The club's Week 1 week ran a Thursday report and a Friday game report. Thursday's page will carry a second set of labels, and Friday's the word, if any, beside Penix's name for Sunday. Wednesday moved the reporting. It did not move the record. What the club has signed is a roster and a set of participation labels, and a rep plan is on none of them; until one is, the reporters have the unit and the club has the decision.
