What Friday Fixed

"Cooper will start. Jack will be the backup." Kevin Stefanski said that after Friday's practice, per the club's Will McFadden, and those two sentences settle more than three practice reports did. They name the two quarterbacks who dress against Carolina on Sept 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Cooper Rush and Jack Strand, and, without meaning to, the room behind the starter. That room is the piece.

The room as printed

The club's Friday game report lists Tua Tagovailoa as Doubtful (oblique) and Michael Penix Jr. as Out (knee). On the same page's practice side Penix is a full participant, as he was Thursday, and the club's sentence is that he "will be inactive for his second straight game to begin this season." I am printing both lines, not reading the knee. Stefanski said he felt "really confident in the plan" for Penix's return and added, "When he's ready, he'll be ready." Three full practices did not move that second sentence. A Week 2 start for Rush is a decision about Sunday, not a verdict on Penix or Tagovailoa.

Strand, per ESPN's roster, is 22, a rookie out of Minnesota State Moorhead with no NFL regular-season game on his log, and he is absent from the Pittsburgh box score. "Undrafted" is the club's word. The league's emergency-third-quarterback rule, as the NFL published it, requires two active quarterbacks before a third can be designated, and says that designee "is permitted to enter a game only if the club's two active quarterbacks are unable to play either by disqualification or injury" and "cannot enter the game due to the club benching QB1 or QB2." The club's post names two quarterbacks and no third, and the league text does not say whether a player carrying Doubtful or Out can be that designee, so I will not. If Rush's back, a full practice Thursday and Friday, becomes a problem Sunday, the next quarterback is Strand, and there is no benching path to anyone else.

The plan's evidence

Here is what the numbers actually tell you. Rush's Week 1 line, per ESPN's box: 12 of 22 for 143 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, sacked four times, in the Steelers' win, Pittsburgh 20, Atlanta 13, at Acrisure Stadium on Sept 13. Atlanta netted 118 passing yards and converted 2 of 12 third downs, with a quarterback who, per the club, had back spasms the day before. The AJC's Daniel Flick reported that after splitting first-team snaps with Penix on Wednesday and Thursday, "Rush took all the first-team reps Friday." By NFL.com's count of 17 starts on record, Sunday is his 18th. That is the evidence: one start in this offense and one Friday of every first-team rep.

What Carolina heard

The Panthers' site, in a Friday piece by Darin Gantt and Kassidy Hill, wrote that "The only issue would have been if Penix or Tagovailoa started, since a left-handed quarterback starts his progressions on the opposite side of the field." Dave Canales's own words: "the style of it, right-handed versus left-handed, changes a little bit in terms of where the progression starts." Friday removed the one variable Carolina says it was carrying, and handed Canales his reminder: Dec 15, 2024, Dallas 30, Carolina 14 at Bank of America Stadium, Rush 18 of 29 for 214 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, per ESPN's box. A reminder for his defense, not a projection.

That defense: Chicago 59, Carolina 37, on Sept 13 at Bank of America Stadium, all 59 on Chicago's offensive possessions per ESPN's scoring summary. Chicago gained 552 yards and converted 10 of 14 third downs. Set 10 of 14 beside Atlanta's 2 of 12 and you have the column Sunday is actually about. A Rush plan in this offense is wide-zone run and play-action off it, a quarterback asked to execute within structure rather than improvise. It does not need to score 59. It needs to stay on the field on third down against a defense that could not get off it. One game of evidence against one; I will not call it.

Two dates

On Atlanta's side, A.J. Terrell Jr. is Questionable (shoulder) after not practicing Friday, so the corner room I wrote about Thursday is unsettled, and Chris Lindstrom is Questionable (concussion) after a full one. Dex Ponce wrote Wednesday that whoever starts Sunday starts Thursday at Lambeau Field on Sept 24; the first half of that now has a name, and the second half is his to grade. What Friday fixed is Carolina's week and the shape of Atlanta's room. What it left is a two-deep whose second name has no NFL regular-season snap on record, and a third-down column one game each has filled in. The rule, the roster and that column are about how much of Sunday one quarterback has to carry, the question this season keeps asking in different words.
