Atlanta has spent two days pointing at this weekend. It starts at 7:00 tonight, and the one game in it that can end with a championship comes on the first night rather than the last.

Game 7 at 8:00, in San Francisco, on USA Network and CNBC. The series is tied at three games each after Atlanta won Game 6 at home 80-69. It is the first Game 7 in WNBA Finals history, and Atlanta are the visiting team in it. ESPN's own preview frames it as a first championship for whichever club takes it.

The two players this series turns on arrive in different conditions. Rhyne Howard is scoring — CBS Sports has her at 19.0 a game across the last four. Allisha Gray is scoring with an injured left hand: ESPN quoted her on October 23, still dealing with it through the Finals, saying she is "feeling fine, but I am not 100%." She then put up 23 in Game 6. The difference between them is not what they are producing. It is what they are producing it through.

Two Tilt bylines have gone opposite ways on tonight. Simone's read is that Atlanta do not have a road problem but a Chase Center problem. Dex is taking Atlanta anyway, and says so knowing a Tilt byline disagrees. One of them is wrong by the end of the night, and that is the newsroom working rather than failing.

Yesterday this brief said Atlanta were second in the Southeast and held the division's only positive point differential. Both halves are wrong this morning, and Atlanta did not play to make them wrong. Washington beat Charlotte 95-79 on Friday, which puts Atlanta, Washington and Charlotte all at 3-3 with nobody a game back, and Washington's differential is positive now too, at plus 0.8.

The correction narrows the claim rather than killing it. Atlanta's plus 4.7 per game is still the division's best and still the only mark above plus one, and their .667 divisional win percentage is the highest of the five. Tied for first, then — not leading it.

The tie gets argued in person next week: Atlanta play Washington twice in three days, Wednesday and Friday. Tonight is at New Orleans at 7:00, against a team that is 1-4 and has won once at home. And the three clubs level at 3-3 are sitting on the 6, 7 and 8 seeds in the East: identical records, three different places to stand.

Anterio Thompson, the defensive tackle Atlanta drafted in the sixth round in April, posted this week that he was diagnosed in early May with a genetic mutation in his spinal cord and has been told he will never play football again. He is on the reserve/non-football injury list and has not played a regular-season game. The designation was already on the record — the Atlanta Journal-Constitution had reported it by September 2 — and what he published this week is the diagnosis underneath it. Miles has the difference between a filing and an account.

Sunday is at Tampa Bay at 1:00, at Raymond James Stadium. Carolina lead the NFC South, and Miles has the three points the whole thing rests on.

The 11 players who declared free agency on October 29 included both of Atlanta's primary shortstops, Ha-Seong Kim and Kyle Farmer. Ellis has all 11.

What they left is a 40-man roster carrying 34 players — 23 pitchers, 11 position players, six spots open — and exactly one of them listed at shortstop: Jim Jarvis. Ozzie Albies and Brett Wisely are both listed at second base, so this is a question about what the roster says rather than about who could stand there. One listed shortstop is not a crisis. It is a shopping list.

Toronto FC come to Mercedes-Benz Stadium tomorrow at 4:30. On October 7 this brief listed Toronto among the clubs parked just ahead of Atlanta on 29 points. Toronto are on 39 now. Atlanta are on 30, and come in off a 2-1 loss at New York City FC on October 28.

Toronto have taken 10 points in the 24 days since; Atlanta have taken three. The gap was two points on October 7 and it is nine this morning. It is not a Toronto story particularly — Columbus were on 29 that same morning and are on 41 now.

Atlanta are 14th of 15 in the East on 30 points from 32 matches, and two fixtures remain. Both are against clubs on 39 points: Toronto tomorrow, then Red Bull New York next Saturday.

Atlanta plays a Game 7 and a game seven tonight, an hour apart. The Hawks' is the seventh game of a season that is six games old. The Dream's is the last game they will play this year, and it is for a championship. Only one of those two things is worth rearranging an evening for.
