The Rescue Quarterback Is Already on the Roster

Atlanta spent Monday morning demanding that somebody go get a quarterback. Atlanta got one in 2024, eighth overall, and he was standing in the building the whole time you were typing.

That is the joke. Here is why it is not a cheap one.

The decision hit the AP wire at 8:10 Monday morning. The fan-reaction roundup that captured the loudest hour of this went up at 10:28. The Falcons' own explanation of why they made the call did not publish until 11:30.

Read those three numbers again. The angriest hour of this news cycle happened before the team had said a single word about its reasoning.

"BRUH HOW." "welcome to atlanta arch manning." "We gotta stop giving them our money." Nobody in that thread had been handed anything to be wrong about yet.

One of them wrote, "I survived 28-3 but this in person might be the final dagger man." In person. That is somebody with a ticket telling you they might not use it. I am not making a joke out of that one.

What the crowd had at 10:28 was one word. Of nine write-ups on the decision, "bench" lands on Michael Penix Jr. in exactly two, and in one of those it lives in the headline while the body of the same page says inactive. Nobody held that word against the record printed next to it. Once you have it, the demand writes itself.

"Falcons should just tank and go get Moore or Arch."

I am not calling that stupid, because it is not. Arch Manning went back to Texas this year. Moore -- reading that as Oregon's Dante Moore is my inference, not the fan's word -- went back to Oregon too. Neither one can be drafted before 2027, so the plan holds together. It is just asking Atlanta to wait a year for a quarterback while a quarterback stands in the building.

Here is what he actually said Monday, in the Associated Press wire story Maura Carey filed at 8:10 that morning.

"I want to be stronger. I want to be able to go out there and give the team 100%, and if I don't feel like I can do that, I don't want to."

"That's not fair for this team. That's not fair for this organization. I want to make sure whenever I am out there, I'm 100%. There's no doubt in my mind that I trust my knee."

He sets the bar at 100% twice in four sentences. Read the last line again: the knee is the one thing he says he has no doubt about.

A city spent Monday furious on his behalf. He spent Monday worried about being unfair to the city.

One more number, and it is the one that reframes all of this. The club said partially torn ACL, left knee, on November 19. Monday was nine months and nineteen days later. A verdict got filed on that knee at 10:28 in the morning, an hour before anybody explained anything.

And if you want the only actual benching anywhere in this story: Tua Tagovailoa, by Miami, after his last start in Pittsburgh on December 15, per the AP. He walks back into that building Sunday as Atlanta's starter.

Miles had the shape of this six days early in Five Months, No Verdict. I had Tua at 60 percent on September 1 in Four Deep, Zero Sure while the national lean ran the other way. It cashed. Moving on.

Nobody has reported a timeline for Penix. Before you send me the screenshot: ESPN's injury page carries an estimated return date of September 20 and a note saying he waits "at least one more week." An estimate and a floor. Neither one is reporting, and nobody has put a name on either. So I am not borrowing them.

I'm 64% sure Michael Penix Jr. takes a regular-season snap for Atlanta on or before Sunday, November 15, the Kansas City game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. There is no Week 11 game on Atlanta's schedule after it. That number is a prediction and not a report, and it is the only date in this piece with my name on it. Sixty-four, not eighty-eight, because I cannot see a knee from out here and neither can you.

If that game ends and he has not taken a live regular-season snap, I was wrong, and I will write that column myself. My Braves number from Sunday is still 48 and nothing today touched it.

Nobody needs to go get Atlanta a quarterback. Somebody needs to let the one Atlanta already has finish the sentence he started Monday.
