Striker or Habit, and How You'd Know

I wrote a sentence on Thursday. On Friday morning the league’s own publication printed something very close to its opposite.

Tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET, at Nu Stadium at Miami Freedom Park, a football match starts deciding which of us was nearer to right. It has not kicked off. Nothing below is a result.

### Where he is right

J. Sam Jones, writing for mlssoccer.com on Friday, called Breel Embolo "the most important piece of the puzzle for a team that’s scored fewer goals (25) than any other team in the Eastern Conference."

The number is correct, and not a rounding error. Twenty-five goals in 22 matches is the lowest total in this conference, a structural indictment of a forward line. I printed it myself on Thursday.

His sentence does not stop there. The next line is "But he’s not the only piece," and the rest of his article is about Júnior Alonso, Paulo Díaz and the emergence of Adrian Gill. Structure, not strikers. He closes on a hedge: "It’s not clear if that means they’re actually good."

There is no evangelist here to knock over. Jones says the most important single repair is a No. 9. On Thursday I argued the binding constraint is not the No. 9 at all — that what is missing was never a striker, it is the one point this team never takes.

We agree the squad got better; we disagree about which repair the table has been waiting on.

### A correction and a concession

The correction is ours. Yesterday in this space I listed Breel Embolo, Mauricio Amaro and Luke Brennan as out. Atlanta United’s own Friday report says otherwise: Embolo and Amaro are officially eligible and at Tata Martino’s disposal, and Brennan is healthy. Giuliano Galoppo is the one who cannot play, his visa unresolved.

Available is not starting. But the striker Jones calls the most important piece is, as of last night, actually selectable.

The concession is mine. On Wednesday I wrote that ninth place is not worth reinforcing. I named the Embolo deal in that same piece — announced August 23, a reported $18 million, tied to the club through 2029-30 — and filed it under next season. Tonight it is selectable. What I did not weight: a signing made for 2030 can still be on the field in September. What I do not take back is the rest. A striker on that deal is next season’s signing, available tonight by accident of the calendar.

### The two men closest to him describe a structure

Martino, on the two arrivals: "I think those are two players who can help the team to be more intense on the field. They’re two players who can add more of a presence within the team."

Intensity. Presence. Not finishing.

Alexey Miranchuk — five goals, seven assists, the squad’s leading scorer — told the club’s own preview how tonight has to be played. "With Miami, you have to go really high press and go maximum... or you need to drop and be more disciplined. Then from there, you can use Embolo as an anchor. There’s no in between."

An anchor. A reference point in a high press and in a low block. The head coach and the leading scorer both describe a reported $18 million centre-forward by what he does without the ball. That is not proof. It is a third account, and it is not about goals.

### What would prove me wrong

The part I owe you before kickoff, not after.

If Atlanta are shut out and beaten without ever leading or being level late, my frame does not explain the evening. You cannot fail to hold a position you never reach. That is Jones’s night, and I will say so.

If Embolo plays, scores, and Atlanta still surrender a lead or a late parity, that one is mine. The goal was created. The point was not held.

And if Atlanta leave the club sitting second in this conference with a point — on the road, against a side fresh off a 7-1 win — that is the first live evidence this season of the capability I said is absent. I would count it. Saying so now is what makes it count later.

### Before anyone checks the table

Every figure here is a Saturday-morning figure. Atlanta are 13th of 15 in the East on 21 points, four behind ninth-placed Orlando City, and ninth is the line — nine clubs per conference reach the playoffs, per MLS’s competition guidelines. There are 14 matches on the league’s card today; that gap will very likely read differently tonight, and almost none of it will be Atlanta’s doing.

The league’s own preview of tonight is headlined after Lionel Messi; Atlanta appear in it as the opponent, which is a fair reading of 21 points.

Ninety minutes at a stadium that opened in April will not settle a season, or a sentence. But it is the first night this year that the squad both arguments are about can take a field.
